According to Commission Regulation (EU) no. 847/2012 of the European Commission of 19 September 2012, thermometers containing mercury shall not be placed on the market after 10 April 2014 except "thermometers exclusively intended to perform tests according to standards that require the use of mercury thermometers“. This transition rule applies until 10 October 2017; after this date, no mercury thermometers may be placed on the market in the EU.
